about
After a long hibernation, International Velvet is back! The psychedelic, electronica, Sitar side project of Rob Myers (Thievery Corporation, Fort Knox Five, Thunderball & See-I) is awake once again, returning to form with a new single. "Children of the Uncanny Valley" is an epic, Sitar-saturated head trip with just the right amount of delay, decay and dub to give it healing powers.
Myers, perhaps best known for his Sitar riff on Thievery Corporation's "Lebanese Blonde" has had his hands full with his duties on guitar in the Thievery Corporation Live band and with DC Reggae Soul legends See-I, as well as producing and performing with his other collaborations Fort Knox Five and Thunderball. When the world took a pause, Myers took the opportunity to dust off the sketches folder and rekindle International Velvet. Handling all the instruments, recording and production by himself, International Velvet is where Rob shines on his own.
The music showcases more of Myers' sitar than any of his previous releases with a single sitar melody winding slowly and meticulously atop a steady, dubby synth bass. "Children of the Uncanny Valley" is a seven minute string-bending ride that empties into a deep sonic valley that sits, uncannily, in the very middle. Released on Fort Knox Recordings, the label Myers runs with his fellow Fort Knox Five and Thunderball band mates Steve Raskin and Sid Barcelona, this is a release that's personal to him on every level.
A graphic designer by trade Myers decided to use the Carte blanche he had with this release to get his feet wet in the contentious new world of AI Art by incorporating it into a digital collage. He created an image hundreds of layers deep that evokes the graphics of an era close to his heart: '70s Prog Rock. The artwork for "Children of the Uncanny Valley" has been meticulously crafted to sit comfortably on an LP shelf somewhere between Boston "Don't Look Back" and Yes "Fragile."
Keep your ears open for more International Velvet, with a Remix EP coming out next season featuring a Drum 'n Bass sizzler by Thunderball.

Almost impossible to pick a favourite from this bunch, they're all so cool. For now, I'm singling out the Kinks one because it's such an original song choice but ask me tomorrow and it'll be a different one! themichaelmoran
